Finding the original location of an image in File Explorer in Darktable can be tricky. While researching, I couldn’t find a direct method, like right-clicking on the image (Lightroom reference) on Darktable. I came up with a workaround, though.
Method 1: Using the Image Information Panel
You can copy the image location and paste it into the address bar of File Explorer by removing the image file name.
- Open Darktable and go to either the lighttable or darkroom view.
- Locate the image you want to find in your file system.
- In the left panel, expand the file information module if it’s not already expanded.
- Look for the full path option from the list.
- Choose the file path without the file name.
- Example: If the full path is D:\Darktable\project1\IMG_54363.CR2, select only D:\Darktable\project1\, excluding IMG_54363.CR2.
- Right-click on the selected path and choose Copy (shortcut: Ctrl + C).
- Open your system’s file explorer (File Explorer on Windows, Finder on macOS, or a file manager in Linux).
- Paste the copied path into the address bar of your file explorer and press Enter to open the folder containing the image.
- To locate the exact image, either search the file name or scroll to find it.
